Shards of Skye (The Skye Chronicles Book 1) Page 4

Maddox shook his head and walked quickly out the back door. He looked around seeing no one but he could hear noises. He walked towards the noises and saw Don and Skye leaning against her car talking. Don put his hand on Skye’s face but she brushed it away. He did it again and she snapped at him.

“Don, stop it dude! We broke up and I’m not interested. We said we’d still be friends and that’s it.”

“You always were a little bitchy.” Don said rudely. Maddox was about to teach him a lesson in manners, but Skye did it for herself. She punched him hard in his shoulder.

“Get out of my face!” she spat at Don. He walked off holding onto his shoulder. Maddox walked up out of the shadows so she could see him.

“You okay?” He hated that he was that concerned.

“You would be here too!” She groaned. “I’m fine. My ex-boyfriend needed to learn some boundaries that’s all.”

“Geez, can no one just be nice to you?” Skye paused at his words.

“Only a few ever are and it still surprises me.” She answered honestly. They stood looking at each other for a moment. Both of them felt the unexplainable pull yet they both fought it.

Skye started to turn to get in her car but tripped over a rock. She fell backwards with a yelp but Maddox caught her in his arms before she fell. An electric charge ran through his arms and into her body causing a light to flash between them and then quickly disappear. They both gasped staring at each other. Maddox helped her to her feet then released her taking a step back.

“What the hell was that?” Skye demanded.

“I have no clue.” He lied. He walked away from her towards his own car, getting in then taking a deep breath. She wasn’t human. It explained the pull he felt towards her. And the electric charge with the flash of light, well she was a supernatural like he was. The only difference was she didn’t seem to realize it yet.

  Chapter Four

Skye walked into her house locking the door behind her. She paused in the hallway confused. Had she hallucinated? No. She knew it was real. He had seen it as well. He felt it. She knew he had or he wouldn’t have run off the way he did. What bothered her the most was Maddox didn’t seem too surprised by it.

Skye walked into the living room where her step-father was passed out on the couch. His limbs were hanging off the couch and he was shirtless again. Skye was about to pay him to start wearing a shirt. Why her mother allowed him to be such a lazy drunk was beyond her.

She walked into the kitchen where her mother was having a drink of her own. Lucille looked up at Skye then back down at her drink. Skye sighed then sat at the table across from her mother. Lucille looked up at Skye amazed she was sitting with her. They never spent time together. She let Skye do what she wanted just to keep her out of her own hair.

“Mom, can we talk?” Skye looked worried which immediately had Lucille concerned.

“What do you want?” Lucille snapped.

  “Am I… different?”

Skye felt lost. She didn’t know what to ask. Or even how to ask it. Lucille’s back straightened a bit at the question. Skye noticed her mom looked uncomfortable, more than usual.

“I don’t know what you mean.” Lucille looked away.

“Yes, you do. You’d normally tell me how much of a freak I am. Why aren’t you saying that now?” Skye looked at her mother suspiciously.

“Christ, Skye leave it be. I’m sorry if I’m not in the mood to tell you how weird you are. If you’re going through some finding yourself emotional bullshit please do it somewhere else!” Lucille raised her voice.

“Something happened tonight. Something I don’t understand.” Skye decided not to fight her, but just to be straight with her.

“What? Did someone approach you?” Lucille’s hand shook lightly and Skye noticed.

“Why would you ask that?” Skye questioned.

“Don’t play games with me on this! Did someone approach you tonight?” Lucille yelled. Skye shrugged.

“Not anyone special. A new guy from school was hitting on me, but that’s it.” Lucille sighed at her words.

“Then what’s the point of this?” Lucille demanded.

“Things happen with me. Things that aren’t normal human things.” Skye whispered.

Lucille got up from the chair and backed up to the cabinets. She stared at Skye silently for several moments. Skye was ready to beg her to talk. Her mom knew something that she wasn’t sharing. That much was obvious.

“Don’t mess around with things like that.” Lucille said staring at her.

“Like what? Mom, you have to talk to me! I don’t know what’s going on!” Skye begged. Lucille walked over and got directly into Skye’s face.

“Don’t talk about it. Don’t do anything weird. If you see anyone that seems not human you stay away from them! I won’t have that happen again. Do you understand?” she whispered. Skye nodded too shocked to say anything else. Lucille left Skye sitting at the table and walked out.

“What the hell?” Skye whispered to herself.

She went into her bedroom and sat on the bed. She stared at her hands, they looked normal but Skye knew that wasn’t the case. She had always known she was different and now it seemed like that secret was out. She wasn’t crazy after all. There was a secret that no one was sharing with her.

She thought about Maddox and how he had been the only person she had felt the electric pull towards. He had seen the light and felt the pull. Something in her told her he had. Why then did he run away? Skye frowned. She was determined to find out for herself.

The problem was did she really want to know? What if it wasn’t a good thing? Her mother was terrified, and she never acted that way. She wanted to talk to Maddox and see if he knew anything, but she had been determined to steer clear of him. She sighed. She supposed that plan was out if she wanted the truth.

“Dad, I wish you were here. I’m so confused.” She whispered to herself in the darkness of her room.

Skye sat in her car in the school parking lot. She had already waved her friends off so she could be alone. She was determined to speak to Maddox. He pulled up and parked in front of her like he had the day before. He turned his car off and stared at Skye. Neither of them moved.

Skye finally climbed out of her car, then went to his passenger side door and got into his car. Maddox looked at her amazed. Skye felt a bit amazed as well. She still couldn’t really feel her own legs. They had taken her to him yet she felt like someone else had made her do it. She knew that wasn’t true though she was still nervous.

“This isn’t the first time someone has just jumped into my car, but it is the most shocking.” Maddox said to break the ice.

“You saw it. You felt it too, right?” Skye stared into his eyes. Maddox let out a breath.

“Yeah, I did.” Skye waited for more, but nothing came.

“Maddox, please tell me what happened?” She asked softly.

He wanted to groan. He loved the sound of his name on her lips, but hated the desperation in her voice. He didn’t know how much to say. What would scare her off? What did she know already?

“Tell me what you know first.” He decided.

  “Nothing!” she exclaimed.

“Bull. You know something. Last night scared you yeah, but I have a feeling this isn’t the first time something weird has happened to you.” he said frustrated.

“I… I’ve had weird things happen before, never with anyone else.” she admitted.

  “Like what?”

“I don’t get sick. I haven’t cried since my dad died… and… when I bleed it’s a different color.” She whispered. She already felt nervous around Maddox due to her attraction to him, and now she was exposing herself completely to him. Things that no one knew, not even her own mother.

“What color is your blood?” He asked. She shook her head.

“No. I talked now you talk.” She crossed her arms.

“Skye, there are things in this world that normal humans do
n’t understand. There are different kinds of people. People like you and me.” he said.

  “What are you?” she asked.

“I’m not saying.” he shut down.

  “Why not?”

“There are different types of supernaturals and not all of them get along. Most don’t. If you’re different than me then we might not get to talk anymore. I’m not ready to stop talking to you.”

Skye paused. Maddox had confessed to wanting to keep talking to her. He must like her, even if just a little bit. But he also just admitted that they weren’t human. As much as the tingling sensation in her body wanted to focus on the possibility of him liking her she knew she had to focus on the subject they were discussing.

Skye looked at her hands then looked to him. She slowly stretched her hand towards his arm. He jerked back suddenly causing her to bring her arm back.

“Don’t! Not here where others can see.” He looked around then back to her.

  “Where then?” she pushed.

“We can’t go to my house.” He said. “What about yours?” she thought for a moment then nodded.

“Follow me.” She went back to her car in a hurry. He followed her back to her home. She was relieved to see that no one was there. Her mother wouldn’t have cared about her not being in school, but Skye didn’t want her to meet Maddox.

He walked up behind her as she unlocked the door. She felt the heat coming from his skin and savored the feeling of it. Shaking her head she remembered why they were there and had him follow her to her bedroom. She closed the door behind him. He stood looking around at her room and the posters on her wall.

Skye looked at him standing in her room. He took up so much space. Having Maddox in her room felt so odd. She never let people into her house let alone her room. She had to admit to herself a part of her liked him being there. That scared her more than anything.

“Nice bands. I like most of them.” He said looking back to her. Skye stood awkwardly by her door not sure what to do. Maddox took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

  “Now what?” she asked.

“Come here. I promise I won’t hurt you.” He stretched his hand out holding it still. She stared at his hand then looked into his eyes. She felt truth coming from him. He had meant what he said.

She walked slowly to him then placed her hand in his. They both gasped loudly as the charge between them magnified. A light purple light shot out of her body as a bright red light shot out of his. Both lights met in between them and mingled as if fighting for dominance. The light became one light meeting in the middle, sharing the two colors within it.

Skye felt her stomach tingling. Then the rest of her body followed feeling the same. Maddox grabbed Skye behind her neck pulling her to his body and pressing his lips hard onto hers. They both gasped at the feeling. Their lips felt the electric pull that they had been feeling since they met.

Skye had tried to resist but abandoned that quickly, giving in to the kiss. She pressed herself against Maddox, wrapping her arms around his neck kissing him harder. His tongue invaded her mouth and danced with her tongue. Skye moaned into the kiss, not feeling in control of her body, but not caring either.

Maddox heard her moan which tightened his stomach muscles. He had wanted her the moment he saw her. No, the moment he felt her. He had felt her before he even saw her. She was beautiful and full of mystery. He wanted her. Now here she was in his arms kissing him like there was no tomorrow.

He picked her body up against his laying her on the bed, never taking his lips off of hers. She opened her legs leaving a place for him. He pressed himself onto her body unable to stop his hips from moving. His body was exactly where he needed it to be, on top of hers. She gasped and raised her hips to match his rhythm. Maddox growled at the amazing sensation of rubbing on her. He felt her heat and it drove him past the edge of sanity.

“Maddox,” she moaned his name. His hands flew down to his jeans. She was only wearing a skirt. He knew he could be inside her in a moment. As his hand started to undo his fly his hands froze.

Reality slammed into him and he jumped off of her body. He backed into the wall shocked at his actions. He had promised not to hurt her yet nearly tore her clothes off to take her. Skye sat up in her bed gasping for breath. She pulled her skirt down hiding the little black panties Maddox’s eyes seemed glued on. Really where was his control he thought he had?

“I’m sorry,” he said trying to calm his breathing down. Skye nodded doing the same. The light between them was now gone. Skye wondered if it had disappeared when they stopped touching or if it had been there the whole time.

Her face was flushed and she felt overheated. She couldn’t believe she had nearly had sex with Maddox. She admitted to herself that she wanted to, just not after only knowing him for a day. She watched as Maddox fixed his pants. The bulge in his pants still evident. Maddox let out a small laugh.

“Don’t stare.” She laughed as he said it.

“Sorry. It’s impressive.” She blushed a bit more. Maddox licked his lips.

“You taste like pure sugar. It’s the sweetest taste I’ve ever had.” Skye blushed at his words.

“I forgot to mention that. It’s natural. I don’t know what it is either.” she said.

They remained frozen in place feeling a million different emotions. Awkward was high on the list. Neither of them had expected that. They both had enjoyed it though. Skye stood up slowly but didn’t go to him.

“Have you ever had that happen?” She asked softly feeling embarrassed.

“I’ve never experienced anything like that before.” he said shaking his head. “I need to use your bathroom.” He walked into her bathroom closing the door.

Skye let out a huge breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. The break from him in the room was much needed. She tried to get her thoughts to focus on the light and the pull they had felt, but her body was still stuck on the pleasure resonating within her body. After a few moments he walked back in the room looking calmer. Skye felt the same way.

Maddox sat on the edge of Skye’s bed far enough away from her that he wouldn’t be able to accidentally touch her. Skye laughed at the awkwardness of it all. Maddox couldn’t help but laugh at the sound of her.

“What is so funny?” he asked.

“This is all so freaking weird now. It was weird enough having this strange pull to you, then figuring out we are both not human. Oh, and add sexual tension to that list and I think it’s covered.” she said with a smile.

“Yeah okay it is odd. Why don’t we take it a step at a time to make it easier? We both feel something towards each other, besides the sexual attraction I mean.”

“Yeah. I feel like my insides are pulling me towards you.” She admitted looking downward. “Like it hurts to not be near you.” Maddox was taken aback at her honesty. He knew he had to be as honest.

“I feel the same way.” Her eyes shot up looking to him and smiled shyly.

“What are you?” she asked hoping he would answer this time. Maddox sighed looking away for a moment then looked into her eyes.

“Half human and half demon.” he finally confessed. Skye gasped.

“Demon? Aren’t demons evil or something? I don’t understand.”

“For the most part yes they are. I’m only half demon though. I’m capable of being evil and I have been in the past. But I try not to be.” Skye wondered if she had started doing drugs at some point and didn’t remember it. This was unreal.

“Okay, it’s going to take time to adjust to that. What am I? I need to know.” she pleaded with him.

“I’m not sure. It depends on what your mom is.”

  “My mom?”

“You get it from your parents and you said your dad was dead. My guess is your mom is the one with powers.”

“My mom is utterly boring and normal. There’s no way!” Skye protested.

“It could be your dad. How did he die?” he asked.

  “I don’t know.
I mean, I was there and I have flashes of memory from it, but it’s all distorted. I remember my mom holding a shot gun. There were two men in the house and I think dad was fighting them. Then mom shot the gun and my dad was gone. I’ve asked about that night so many times, but she won’t tell me anything.”

  “Why not?” he wondered.

“She always claimed intruders had killed him then took his body. But she has this urn with ashes in it and she also claims that’s his body. The thing is there never was a funeral. How she has these supposed ashes confuses me.” Skye pondered out loud.

“I need to meet your mom.” He said causing her eyes to snap to him.

  “What? Why?”

“I need to shake her hand. I won’t feel what I do with you, but I will be able to tell if she’s human or not.” Skye nodded even though she hated the idea of him meeting her evil mother.

“But be honest with me Maddox. You have to have some idea or guess as to what I am.” he hated the look of desperation in her eyes.

“I have an idea or two. But if I’m right, it means I’m dangerous to you.”

“How are you dangerous to me?” She asked.

“Different supernaturals aren’t meant to be together. Or friends.” He added quickly. “Demons hunt certain other supernaturals.” He whispered the last part.

“You think that whatever I am is something your kind hunts, don’t you?”

“Most likely, yes. Because of your color of light, your color of blood, and the way you feel.” he responded.

“What do you think I am?” she insisted.

“You’re most likely fae, a fairy, or an elf.” Skye stared at him in disbelief.

“Well, those are boring.” he laughed at her response.

“What did you want?” he questioned her.

“I don’t know. Something badass like yours. I mean I’m either a flying little fairy or a short pointy-eared earth gnome.” she shrugged.

“You don’t know anything of your kind. It’s not like that. The fae and elves are very powerful creatures. They have many magical powers and are really strong fighters. Also they can heal. That’s a big help. If someone is hurt you can use your powers to heal them.”
