  “Your cousin Buck. He just started here today. He was looking around for you a few minutes ago.” Kel said. Maddox felt his whole entire body go tense.

  “We should go find him.” he said carefully leading Skye away from her friends.

  “Maddox, what’s going on?” He pulled her to the side of the school where no one could see them.

  “We have to pretend not to be together.” he said suddenly. Maddox saw the hurt in her eyes. “Not because I don’t want to be. Don’t you see? My dad asking questions this morning and now my cousin showing up? They are checking up on me. We can’t be seen together or he will have to report back to my dad. I can’t have Buck near you. He would figure out what you are and you wouldn’t be safe.”

  “Oh,” Skye said taking it all in, “This sucks.” She couldn’t help but give him a pout. He kissed her lips softly but quickly pulled away.

  “You have to warn your friends not to say anything.” he said.

  “Maddox, the whole school has seen us together.” she pointed out the obvious.

  “They can think we broke up though. I will keep you safe even if I have to pretend not to be with you during school hours.” he said quickly then walked away. Skye stood by herself for a moment before walking back to her friends.

  “Did his cousin ask about me?” she asked quickly.

  “He asked if he was seeing anyone. I told him that he had eyes and could see everyone here.” Kel said in her sarcastic tone.

  “It’s your business so we weren’t about to go around sharing your personal life.” Evan said. Skye hugged her friends with a sigh.

  “Thank you. Look Maddox has a strict family life so they can’t know about us.”

  “The whole school has seen you two fawning over each other.” Mike said in disgust. Skye was taken aback from his tone but kept on.

  “We will say we broke up. We have to keep distance between us.” Skye said.

  “Anyone want to take bets on who breaks that first?” Evan asked with a laugh. Skye shoved him playfully. The first bell rang.

  “Off to class.” Skye said rushing to her class. Usually it was a great time because she could sit with Maddox and give him secret smiles during class. Now she would have to restrain herself.

  When she walked in she noticed him sitting two seats away from his usual spot. She sat in the corner and had to restrain herself from looking over at him.

  She wondered if she would recognize his cousin but that was answered as soon as he walked in. He was large like Maddox with black hair but looked older. He walked to the back of the classroom and sat in between Maddox and Skye.

  Maddox suddenly hated that his cousin was so close to her. He realized that there was a flaw in his plan. If he was keeping his distance it only gave Buck permission to be near her. Skye kept her eyes forward and noticed everyone else sneaking peeks at him.

  “Hey, I’m Buck.” he said in her direction. Skye looked over seeing him staring at her.

  “Good for you.” she said turning her head away. She heard Buck chuckle at her. Besides Maddox, that was how she had greeted any new person. With Maddox she had been compelled to speak to him.

  Knowing what Buck was there for made her nervous. She wasn’t nervous for herself. She was nervous for Maddox. Although, if she had to admit it she was also nervous of losing Maddox. It wasn’t something she had really considered before.

  “Do you know that guy over there?” Buck spoke to her again.

  She glanced his way to see him pointing at Maddox who was doing a horrible job of pretending not to care. His jaw was moving, his teeth were clenched, and his fists were so tight they looked white.

  “Maddox something.” Skye answered. “So?” she said with a shrug.

  “Is he dating anyone?” Buck asked.

  “Don’t know, don’t care. But if you’re interested in him then maybe you should just ask him.” Skye said with a straight face. Inside she was laughing.

  Maddox slipped and almost laughed but covered it with a cough. Skye wanted to slap him. Here she was putting on a show and he couldn’t keep a straight face. Buck looked amused with her. He looked her up and down.

  “You have a faded bruise on your jaw. I know bruises like that. Someone struck you. I hope you hit him back.” he commented.

  “He’s not in my life anymore so it doesn’t matter. However, I’m so touched by your concern.” Skye was getting madder at him. He was paying attention to every detail of her.

  “Why so hostile? Don’t you want to make friends with people?” Buck said with a cunning smile.

  “Nope. I’m not interested. Thanks.” She turned back to face the front of the classroom where their teacher had finally began to talk. She flipped her hair to the side so she no longer had a view of him.

  Skye felt like it was déjà vu all over again when Maddox first started. Buck was in every one of her classes and sat beside her each time. The only difference was that she had been attracted to Maddox. With Buck she just wanted him to go away.

  When school finally ended she realized she had no ride home. Maddox had brought her to school and her friends were already gone. She walked past Maddox’s car seeing him standing there feeling torn about it as well. She kept walking knowing that it would be a long walk home, but it was what she had to do. After Skye was out of his sight, Maddox turned and saw Buck standing near him.

  “What the hell are you doing here?” Maddox finally asked what he had been dying to ask all day long.

  “Your dad’s new assignment is for me to go back to school.” Buck said rolling his eyes.

  “What is he trying to find out about me?” Maddox asked resigned to the news.

  “He knows you’re dating someone. I didn’t tell him either. He’s worried you’re going to fall in love with some girl and leave the family.” Buck leaned on Maddox’s car.

  “He’s an ass.” Maddox said.

  “So… is the blonde goddess the girl you’re seeing?” Buck asked. Maddox tensed.

  “I dated her for a while, but not anymore. I’m into random girls now.” Buck nodded.

  “Cool. I hope you don’t mind I want to see about tapping that ass. She’s fine and man what a smart mouth! I can think of so many things she could be doing with that mouth.”

  Maddox felt the demon inside of him rattling the cages, screaming to be released. He wanted to break Buck’s jaw for even thinking about her in that way, yet he knew if he showed possessiveness that it would give him away.

  “Good luck with that. The girl’s a prude.” Maddox managed to finally say.

  “She won’t be when I’m done with her. See you tomorrow cousin.” he said walking off.

  Maddox got into his car and waited for the parking lot to clear out before letting out a roar that shook his car. He fought showing his demon side and giving into the evil within him, but at that moment all he wanted to do was go on a rampage that would one day be legendary.

  Skye was silently cursing herself for not wearing comfortable shoes. She loved her knee high boots but they weren’t exactly walking shoes. She was close to taking her boots off and walking barefoot when a truck pulled up beside her. She saw Mike and smiled relieved. He pushed the door open for her so she could get inside.

  “Thank you so much Mike. I did not want to walk all the way home.” Mike smiled happily.

  “Always happy to be your knight in shining armor. Where do you live now? I know you moved, but I haven’t been by to see it yet.”

  “Oh that’s right. I live in Newton Crossing on Pinewood Road.” Mike raised his eyebrows to her intrigued, but headed in that direction.

  “How is it you live there now? Kel said you don’t live with your parents anymore.”

  “Long story short, George was a shithead and my mom isn’t my real mom. My dad left me a lot of money and she was hiding it from me. I’m old enough to take care of myself so I got the hell out of dodge.”

  Skye lifted her skirt a few inches so she could rub the inside of her boots
. Her legs were screaming from the walk. Mike’s eyes were glued to her soft skin. He shook his head remembering he was driving. Once they made it to her street she pointed out her house to him.

  “Want to come in and check it out?” Skye offered. Mike was in the process of unbuckling himself when Maddox’s car pulled in beside his. Mike sighed.

  “Looks like it’s not the right time. Maybe later.” Skye nodded and gave him a quick hug.

  “Seriously thanks for saving me.” she grabbed her backpack and got out of the truck. Maddox wasn’t looking at her though; his eyes were stuck on Mike. Mike smiled to them both then pulled out. Maddox jumped out of his car.

  “Did he touch you?” he nearly yelled. Skye ignored him walking to her front door. She unlocked it and walked inside. Maddox closed the door behind him. “Well?” he asked.

  “I hugged him. Does that count?” Skye answered annoyed.

  “Come on Skye. You know he’s like crazy in love with you.”

  “So what?” Skye shrugged. “I’m like crazy in love with you so don’t assume I’m just going to…” Before she could finish her words she saw how wide his eyes were. He grabbed her pulling her against him. He looked into her eyes for a brief second before kissing her and taking her breath away.

  “You love me.” he grunted into the kiss. His hands were quickly removing her clothes. Skye’s body was in shock by how fast they went from a near argument to nearly naked in her living room. “I need you.” he whispered into her ear. He bit down on her collarbone lightly causing her body to tremble.

  She helped him remove the remaining clothes they were both wearing and then pushed him down onto her couch. He reached out to grab her but she smacked his arms away. She climbed on top of his lap, taking his hands in her own then placed them on her back.

  “Skye, please…” She smiled sweetly at him. She bent over placing her lips on his but did not kiss him. Instead she whispered on his lips softly.

  “Maddox, I love you.” That was all it took.

  Maddox lifted her slightly and placed himself carefully in position. She held onto his shoulders as she slowly lowered herself onto him until he was completely inside of her. Maddox groaned at the sensation of having her tight walls gripping him. Skye let out a thankful breath.

  Skye looked deeply into Maddox’s eyes. She felt the love and attraction she felt for him, but she felt the electric pull as well. She took his hands in her own amazed when the light returned between them.

  “Don’t be afraid.” Skye said to Maddox.

  They focused on the light between them and watched as it grew brighter and larger. The light swirled again, red fighting purple for dominance when finally it merged together making a color neither of them had ever seen before. The light surrounded them and just like before the pull between them was there. Only this time it was stronger than before.

  Skye gasped as her body lit up brightly. Maddox’s body lit as well. She bent over grabbing his hair, pulling it hard in her hands as her tongue invaded his mouth. Maddox felt his muscles heavy and weighed down. It was as if she was in complete control and he was frozen. Skye began moving on his body slowly.

  The feel of him inside of her, stretching her, drove her insane with need. She threw her head back letting out a long and loud cry of pleasure. Her fingers still tangled in his hair. He watched as the beautiful mysterious woman on him brought him greater pleasure than he had ever imagined possible.

  As the light grew brighter, their love making grew more intense. Skye let go of his hair and held onto his neck as she moaned his name repeatedly. Maddox suddenly felt in control of his own body again. He wanted to take it slow with her but at his core he knew he didn’t possess that sort of control yet.

  He reached around her holding her safely in his arms and twining her legs around his body. He pushed her against the wall harder than he had intended. His mind was dying to hear her moans and cries of pleasure. He needed his name on her lips again.

  Without any thought besides the savage need to be inside of her again, he slammed inside of her. He held her body against the wall with his own as he thrust inside of her again and again. His name was a blessing and a curse on her lips. She cried his name out. The sound made him lose what little control he had left.

  Skye was unable to move, trapped in the strength of his arms. She wound her arms around him and wept happily in his arms. She was yearning for the feeling of euphoria he always managed to bring her to. Maddox let out a cry of his own as he found his completion along with her own. Their love making had been swift, raw, and breathtaking.

  Maddox took a few breaths before realizing he could have hurt her. He carefully pulled himself out of her and walked to the couch while holding her in his arms. He cradled her, stroking her hair, searching for answers in her eyes. She looked up to him with a breathless smile.

  “The light’s gone.” she said finally noticing. Maddox laughed loudly at her response.

  “I was worried I hurt you. We’ve only made love a hand full of times and I shouldn’t have lost control like that but with you I can’t help myself. It’s a poor excuse I know.” Skye smiled at him.

  “Actually I think it’s flattering.” She kissed his lips softly. “I must be special.”

  Maddox sighed unhappily.

  “You are special. I’m in love with you.” He sounded so sad that Skye’s heart clenched. She was hearing the words she wanted to hear, but they were said in sorrow.

  “Excuse me? Did you really admit to loving me and say it in an “oh shit” way?” Maddox looked to her and realized how it had sounded.

  “Oh shit. I’m sorry. That did sound horrible. I love you and that makes me extremely happy, but with my family it worries me. At first I was just hiding you so no one would know what you are. Now I have to hide you so my family won’t freak out.”

  “Aren’t there any elves or fairies that your family won’t eat?” she joked, trying to lighten his mood. He did smile however faintly.

  “There have been a few that have been permitted to live but with certain conditions.”

  “Oh that doesn’t sound too good.” She stroked his jaw softly. “What kind of conditions exactly?”

  “I’d rather not talk about it.” he said. “I don’t want to bring this moment down any more than I already have. I’d rather do something else.” he smiled.

  “Do share.” Skye bit her lip in anticipation.

  “I’ll never have enough of you.” He picked her up and carried her to her bedroom on the second floor where they remained for hours.

  Chapter Eight

  The next few weeks in school were torture for Maddox and Skye. They couldn’t be together in public so Skye went back to driving her own car to school instead of riding with Maddox, which was bad enough, but then Buck was constantly hitting on Skye. Maddox was ready to rip his cousin’s spine out and feed it to him.

  “Look girl, I can promise you a good time. Whatever your little heart desires is yours. Just give me a chance.” Skye was leaning against the lockers trapped by the size of his body. She bit her lip in frustration then looked him directly in the eyes.

  “What I desire is not you. Give it up. I’m not going to go out with you. There are tons of girls here that want you so go bother one of them.”

  She tried to move past him, but he put his hand on her shoulder keeping her in place. Skye was debating on whether or not to knee him in his balls when he bent down too quickly for her to stop him and kissed her on the lips.

  He gasped pulling back staring at her. She knew her sugary lips could give her away and he seemed to notice the taste. She smacked him across the face, but felt the sting in her hand apparently more than he had on his face. He hadn’t moved.

  Maddox’s presence was suddenly very apparent as he pulled Buck away from Skye slamming him into the lockers across the hallway.

  “Damn it.” Skye muttered pissed off. Maddox had landed a few good blows on his cousin before Buck defended himself punching him back. �
��Stop it!” she screamed at the both of them.

  She looked around in disbelief as several students and even teachers watched without interfering. They were too intimidated by both of them.

  Skye dropped her backpack and ran quickly in between them putting her arms out to push them away from each other. She knew Maddox would immediately stop as soon as she was there and she was right. Buck froze as well, but he had a huge smile on his face.

  “I take it this is your girlfriend.” Buck stated.

  It wasn’t a question. He knew it would eventually be confirmed and he was right.

  “Okay both of you will stop now. We need to talk about this. Get your crap. We are going to my place.” Skye said grabbing her own backpack. After a pause both men followed her out.

  All three cars followed each other to her home. They parked their cars and Skye took a deep breath for patience. She unlocked her door and held it open for both of them. Buck walked in with a huge smile on his face. Maddox looked like he could wrestle a bear and win without a problem.

  Buck looked around the living room and smirked when he saw a pair of her panties on the floor. Maddox walked over, picking them up and shoved them into his pocket. Skye knew men were difficult, but add in the fact these two are demons as well and she wasn’t sure if she could keep calm herself.

  “You knew Skye was mine and yet you still pursued her?” Maddox questioned Buck. His teeth were clenched tight.

  “Dude, I remember the day in your room when you told me of this goddess that was more beautiful and different than anyone else. Going to that school there were very few girls that could fit into that category. And frankly the others weren’t your type. Now this hot piece of…” Skye cut in.

  “Watch your mouth with me.” she interjected. Buck smiled at her.

  “She has quite a strong spirit too. Oh and her lips are pure sugar.” he licked his lips. Maddox started to charge him again, but Skye put her arm up in the way to block him.

  “I’ll make sure to share my lip gloss with you since it’s so important.” Skye shot back at him. He shook his head with a smile. Only this smile wasn’t a happy one.
